Three Hints to Produce a Simpler Garden
For many, gardening can be an ordeal, however it should be much more simple and fun. Gardening is, most of the time, used to relax people, and should not be something difficult or hard to deal with. Creating a garden will also make your home look considerably better and much more natural. To make your yard look better than it ever has before, utilize the following suggestions to make your garden.
A very important step in making sure that your garden is successful is having properly prepared soil. Plants will always grow in soil that has the right amount of nutrients; this is something that gardeners that know what they’re doing prepare for every year. The old-fashioned way of getting your soil ready is to turn it over with a shovel before you begin to plant. This loosens the soil and makes it easier for plants to develop strong, healthy root systems. Another way to make your soil better is to add compost. Compost, when added in the proper amount, will provide your plants with the nutrients they need to grow. An additional challenge for people who love to garden is an influx of garden “critters” who love to eat your newly planted plants. These can include slugs, bugs, snails, and other pests common to your area. You need to be careful if you consider a chemical pesticide because, not only can they be hazardous to children, adults, and pets, they are usually very expensive. Rather than worry about paying for these kinds of bug sprays, it’s very easy to make your own organic bug repellent at a fraction of the cost. An easy solution for getting rid of slimy snails and slugs is simply to bury a can or plastic container even with the ground in the garden where you suspect the bugs visit. Fill the tin can, or other container, with a little beer. The slugs, lured by the smell or the mixture, will fall into the container and drown. Aphids, another garden problem, can be controlled easily with a spray. This works for houseplants as well as in your garden. Simply mix a tablespoon of liquid dishwasher soap with a gallon of water, and store some of it in a spray bottle. When you see a plant that has been infested with aphids, simply spray your homemade brew on the leaves and the aphids will depart quickly.
When you are thinking about the layout of your garden, picture the addition of fruit trees here and there. They will really enhance your home’s appearance. Towards the end of winter, pick a bare-root tree that offers beautiful blossoms in the springtime. Their beauty will enrich the attractiveness of your home. For example, a plum tree has deep purple leaves and develops stunning pink flowers throughout spring before producing fruit. If you like strawberries, they are very easy to plant from flats you can buy from your nursery. They make good ground cover and also are very attractive when planted in pots with holes down the sides that the plants hang out of. Their flowers are small and white and, of course, the strawberries are wonderful. There are so many vegetables and fruits that are easy to take care of. Most of them just need watered and some kind of weed control and you will have a bountiful harvest in no time at all.
These tips should allow you to have a better understanding of how to grow a garden successfully anytime of the year. Whenever you decide to plant, you should be able to do very well with your garden by utilizing some of these tips.
