Steps on Remodeling a Bathroom: How to Install a New Bathtub

Installing a new bathtub is a process that should be done properly since it can get a bit complicated. However, it is possible to do it yourself, especially if you have basic plumbing and construction skills. Before doing the process, make sure that you have all the necessary materials for the project. The first thing that you would need to do would be to make sure that your new bathtub has a size which would fit in the designated area. Once you have that, you can follow these steps on remodeling a bathroom how to.

1. First off, frame the walls such that the bathtub would fit into the alcove. Leave a gap of an eighth of an inch around the edges.

2. You should then start installing the rough-in plumbing supply lines in the faucet, risers and the showerhead.

3. You then need to slide the tub in place and check if it is level. You could use plastic shims in leveling the tub, as they are less likely to rot as time passes unlike wooden ones. Once the tub is level, you then need to mark the top portion of the nailing flange of the tub on the studs.

4. Determine the correct position of the ledger boards, which would directly attach on to the wall studs beneath the lip of the tub, supporting it.

5. You should then install the P-trap as well as the drainpipe in such a way that the top portion of the P-trap would be level with the floor. You should also make sure that it would be centered beneath drainpipe of the tub.

6. You then need to assemble the drain pipe, along with the overflow pipes. Dry fit them so that you would be able to measure the necessary length to attach the P-trap with the drainpipe. After you have measured it, cut them and attach them properly to the tub.

7. You would then have to install the ledger boards using the markings that you have made earlier. Be sure to make use of galvanized nails or screws so that rusting can be prevented.

8. Slide the tub in place then set it on to the ledgers. The tub’s drainpipe should slide into P-trap.

9. You then have to fasten the tub in place through nailing the flanges using galvanized nails.

10. The drain plug assembly should then be inserted through the overflow opening. Afterwards, attach the cover plate.

11. Try to turn on the water so you can test your plumbing as well as your drainage systems for any leaks. You might also want to have your installation inspected.

12. Lastly, finish the walls and install the faucet handles, tub spout and showerhead.
